  • It’s fine (I guess…)

Honestly it functions well and I’m learning French okay so far. But Oh my gosh I can only make three mistakes without the premium? Learning is about making mistakes and learning from that how am I supposed to learn when I’m angry because I have to buy the premium or wait another 24 hours or something to learn again?! Also the voice thing is not the best, I have to say a word five times for it to register, it’s annoying and inefficient. oh and the adds and the push for premium, make it stop ringing in my ears I beg of you. Every two seconds ADD FOR PREMIUM DUOLINGO. DOWNLOAD PREMIUm. Yeah so I would say 3 is a pretty accurate rating for me, it’s not bad it’s just not great.
  • Lost me as a customer

I’m here to learn a language. I accept all people, regardless of race, religion, orientation, etc. Including homosexual references in lesson after lesson makes me feel manipulated, not educated. It should upset the LGBTQ community as well, who are being used by Duolingo. I cancelled my subscription and after years of using this (900 day streak as of yesterday), I’m out.

  • It's good

Been using it for a week, it's pretty good on its own, but I feel like I would need to go out of my way and do studying outside the app for it to be more effective. It's still pretty good if you want a nice minimum learning every day
  • Changes ruined it for me

I used to love Duolingo. I completed the Russian, Ukrainian, Hindi, Korean, and Arabic courses and finally started on the Spanish course. It’s quite long, so I’ve been working on it for over a year. I have a 900 day streak. Then Duo made a bunch of changes to the path. Okay, fine, but for some incomprehensible reason, they greatly reduced the number of exercises where you can actually type using the keyboard to translate into the target language. Instead, they give you a word bank, and you choose which words to use. Before you had an option between the keyboard and the word bank for every translation, but now you don’t. I’d say now you have a choice 10% of the time. This is just poor pedagogy, especially for a format where active learning is limited. Passive: read and listen. Active: speak and write. Duolingo lacks speaking and has greatly reduced the writing. I find it boring. On top of this, the support, even for subscribers, is nonexistent. They have NEVER answered any of my messages with anything other than a standard “thank you for contacting us “ boilerplate. Bottom line: If you want to be challenged, I would recommend that you find another app. When my subscription expires, I’m moving on.

I spent years learning Spanish on your app. When it changed, I was busted down to year 1 foundations and expected to work through the entire app again. This is annoying. The progress I had made what lessons I chose was helpful and important information. And it was flushed without warning. This was a great disservice to my education. The new lessons are are entirely different and the amount of time, years, it will take to acclimate to where I was have ruined this app for me.
  • Can’t get to the top of a league!

I enjoy this app and have learned a lot but I have decided the league ratings are almost impossible to get to a top. I decided to try and spent a whole day doing the app and finally got to the top. I was over two hundred points ahead of everyone with only 15 minutes to go before the end of the week. In the last 10 minutes someone shot up 400 points. I don’t know how you could get 400 points in 10 minutes when the max in each lesson is 20- 40 if you are doing a legendary lesson. Seems as if the program is rigged so that you have to keep working. Even though I finished second the next minute I was relegated to the bottom of the next challenge. Doesn’t make sense. Won’t be worrying about leagues anymore.
  • What’s considered correct

Names are hard to pronounce/hear in other languages. In the app, i think my answer should still be correct if the sentence is fluent but the person's name was spelled incorrectly.
  • Wants your contacts

Up until this very moment, I loved Duolingo, and will continue to use it; but the sneak attack just now requesting my contacts is absolutely, totally unacceptable. Users should be aware. Shame! Shame!
